If you’ve hiked on Gile Mountain since August you might have noticed the brand new treads on the fire tower. The tower’s old treads had been worn down by several decades of use, dutifully helping us all get up to enjoy the view and it was time to replace them. After months of planning, many days of material prep, and several weeks of intermittent installation work the tower now has new white oak treads that will last the next several decades.
The Norwich Trails Committee wishes to thank all of the volunteers who were involved in planning, acquiring and prepping materials and carrying out the work on the tower, Luke O’Brien from the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation for his advice based on his experience refurbishing other towers in the state, and we’d especially like to thank the Norwich Women’s Club for their generous grant which funded purchasing the bulk of the material.
